Hamilton's big centres and the shops around them run on sales files, supplier mail and a weekly briefing. That is the work Copilot can take a first pass at.

Retail in Waikato

The Base at Te Rapa covers 31 hectares, with about 160 stores and 3,330 carparks. Tainui Group Holdings developed it, and Kiwi Property manages the day-to-day operation under a half-share arrangement that has been in place since 20161. Centre Place, 1.4 hectares in central Hamilton, is owned by the same two parties, with Tainui Group Holdings buying its half in March 20212,5. A centre office and a multi-store retailer both live in email and spreadsheets.

The trading backdrop is tougher than the car park count suggests. The regional economy contracted 0.5 per cent in the year to March 2025, and retail trade shed more jobs than any other sector4. Copilot does not fix demand. It helps the office turn the export and the inbox into a clear note.

Paid employees in retail went from 27,921 in February 2020 to 28,797 in February 2025 (+3.1%).

Where Copilot helps retail teams

  • Sales questions in Excel

Load a till or centre export as an Excel table. Ask Copilot which categories moved and which days were soft. Check the totals before the note goes to store managers.

    • Retail analysts and centre managers
    • Copilot in Excel
  • Supplier follow-up in Outlook

Copilot in Outlook can shorten a delivery thread and draft the chase. The buyer confirms price, pack size and the promised date before it is sent.

    • Buyers
    • Copilot in Outlook
  • Store briefs in Teams

Turn a head-office decision into a short Teams post: what changes on the floor, from when, and who to ask. Staff who missed the huddle can read the same wording.

    • Area managers
    • Teams
  • Promo copy in Word

Copilot in Word can draft a staff briefing from the promo plan and last year's version. A person checks claims and prices against the approved sheet. The Fair Trading Act still applies to the words.

    • Marketing coordinators
    • Copilot in Word
  • A store-questions agent

A Copilot Studio agent over the current trading manual can answer routine questions about hours, markdowns and who approves a refund, and link the page. Out-of-policy cases go to a person.

    • Copilot Studio

Monday trading note from the export

  1. Save last week's sales export in the team's SharePoint folder.
  2. Ask Copilot in Excel for the categories that beat or missed the prior week, and verify the sums.
  3. Draft a five-line brief in Word for store leads.
  4. Post it in Teams with the file linked, and keep price changes in the official sheet only.

Retail in Waikato: questions

Do shop-floor staff need a licence?

Start with buyers, centre operations, marketing and area managers. Floor staff benefit later if they already use Teams for the daily brief. A wide rollout before permissions are tidy is a poor use of the licence.

Can it read the point-of-sale system?

Only through an export or a later connector project. The practical start is Copilot in Excel on a file the team already downloads.

Can training happen at Te Rapa or in town?

Yes. We can work at your office in Hamilton or elsewhere in the Waikato, or run the same exercises live in Teams.

Which files make a useful pilot?

A sales export, one supplier thread, and the current staff briefing template. Remove customer names first.

Does Microsoft sponsor this training?

No. TheColab is independent. Microsoft does not sponsor or endorse the course.
