Retail in Canterbury
Retail office tasks often join information from a buyer, a supplier and a store manager. Copilot's Microsoft 365 experiences span Outlook, Excel, Word and Teams, with work content available according to the account and licence.5 We practise a small reporting or communication task, then check its output against the original record before it reaches staff or shoppers.
Demand is not the same across every business. Retail NZ's national Q4 2025 commentary describes uneven recovery, while Business Canterbury lists consumer demand, productivity and cashflow among regional concerns.3,4 These findings support careful office reporting. They do not justify a sales forecast for a particular Canterbury retailer.
Paid employees in retail went from 47,529 in February 2020 to 49,546 in February 2025 (+4.2%).

Where Copilot helps retail teams
Check a sales and stock workbook
Use Excel with an approved sample export that labels sales, transfers and returns separately. Ask Copilot for an exception table and a draft explanation of the movement. The stock controller checks totals and filters before interpreting a product's performance. Keep the source workbook and the checked report together so another reviewer can trace the finding.5
- Stock reporting coordinator
- Copilot in Excel
Clarify a supplier commitment
In Outlook, review a permitted thread about a product substitution or revised delivery. Ask for the latest confirmed statement and unresolved questions, with references to the messages. The buyer checks attachments and drafts a reply from that position. Do not let a proposed substitute appear in a store briefing as an approved replacement before the decision is made.5
- Retail buyer
- Copilot in Outlook
Draft a store-ready instruction
Give Word the approved promotion note and product facts. Request a staff briefing that separates the offer, eligibility and points needing supervisor confirmation. A merchandise owner reviews the wording against the source conditions. Test whether a new staff member can find the right answer without guessing, then save the accepted briefing in the normal store channel.5
- Store communications lead
- Copilot in Word
Capture the management handover
Where Teams Copilot is enabled for the meeting, draft a recap of the permitted store-management discussion. Divide the output into confirmed actions and outstanding decisions. The chair validates the owners before staff receive it. Use the exercise to spot a handover gap, such as a supplier question that has been discussed but has no assigned follow-up.5
- Regional store manager
- Copilot in Teams
Prototype an internal service finder
Build a Copilot Studio agent over an approved service guide. It should return the source procedure and escalation role for routine order or service questions. Test an incomplete policy and a withdrawn document. Keep the pilot internal, and have the supervisor review its answer quality before expanding the knowledge set or allowing customer-facing use.6

- Copilot Studio
Verify a supplier update before briefing stores
- Choose a de-identified supplier update and the approved product record to which it relates.
- Draft a message summary and store instruction, keeping the buyer's pending decision explicit.
- Have the buyer check the evidence and the store lead test the instruction before either output is distributed.

Retail in Canterbury: questions
Is Copilot only for a large retail head office?
A small shop can practise with a permitted email or workbook if its Microsoft setup supports the task. Check the available app experience and file access before choosing the exercise.5
Can the stock report trigger a reorder?
Begin with a draft report for buyer review. Verify the export and stock-system position before any purchasing action. Training should make the decision evidence clearer, with a person responsible for the order.
How do we test a service agent?
Use ordinary queries, incomplete guidance and questions outside its scope. Check the returned source and escalation role. Copilot Studio's testing and evaluation tools support this review before wider use.6
Can we train store and office staff together?
We can deliver at your Canterbury workplace and build a shared supplier-to-store exercise. Public workshop days suit staff who want an introduction before joining the internal rollout. Bring approved sample material and its owner.
