Education in Canterbury

Ara reports local AI education projects, and the University of Canterbury publishes responsible-use guidance for its community.2,3 The region therefore has concrete examples to discuss rather than only vendor claims. A fictional teaching team can practise preparing a programme-change briefing from public material and invented staff notes.

Microsoft documents Copilot features across Word, Teams, Outlook and Excel, with availability shaped by access and configuration.4 We establish which staff capabilities are enabled before setting the course task. Bring teaching, administration and information owners into the planning conversation. That makes it possible to check both educational meaning and the route a document takes before release.

Paid employees in education went from 24,380 in February 2020 to 27,048 in February 2025 (+10.9%).

Local context

  • Ara's campus list extends beyond Christchurch to Timaru.1 A staff-planning exercise can reflect regional delivery by using fictional campus notes. Keep site-specific questions visible, instead of assuming that a shared programme document means every location has identical arrangements.1

Where Copilot helps education teams

  • Revise a teaching plan in Word

Reference an approved outcome and a public source extract. Ask Word to draft an activity sequence with teacher review points. Check that the sequence still teaches the intended skill and uses the required terminology. Keep assessment judgements outside the draft, and have the teaching owner approve the final resource.

    • Tutors and teaching leads
    • Copilot in Word
  • Recover programme-meeting actions

Use a permitted Teams transcript from a fictional staff meeting. Request actions, owners and unresolved campus questions. Attendees verify the summary before it enters the programme record. Avoid student circumstances in the sample, and distinguish a proposed teaching change from an approved decision about delivery.

    • Programme coordinators
    • Copilot in Teams
  • Prepare a general enquiry reply

Give Outlook a fabricated enquiry and the current public programme information. Ask for a concise response that identifies any detail requiring staff confirmation. Check entry requirements and contact routes against the source. A draft must not promise admission, recognition of prior learning or a place that staff have not approved.

    • Student service administrators
    • Copilot in Outlook
  • Explain a synthetic planning table

Try Excel on invented room and course-planning rows. Ask for missing categories and inconsistent labels before requesting a summary. Verify totals with the spreadsheet's normal tools. The exercise develops analytical checking without processing attendance, achievement or individual support records from real students.

    • Education operations staff
    • Copilot in Excel
  • Find staff guidance through an agent

Copilot Studio can use chosen knowledge sources in a custom agent.5 Build a prototype over staff-facing public procedures. Test requests for obsolete guidance and confidential learner information. The answer should identify the current source or refer the user to the owner, with no claim to make an academic decision.

A reviewed programme-change briefing

  1. Prepare public programme information and fictional notes from different campus roles.
  2. Identify questions that require a teaching or administration owner to respond.
  3. Draft the briefing in Word with the confirmed decisions and outstanding items separated.
  4. Ask the programme lead to check the source files before distributing the approved version.

Education in Canterbury: questions

Do education accounts support all the app tasks?

Confirm the institution's current licences and enabled features with its administrator. Microsoft describes several access levels, so eligibility alone does not establish every capability. The organiser can select a useful set of exercises after that check.4

Can teachers and office staff attend together?

A shared programme-briefing task suits mixed roles. Teachers inspect educational meaning, while administrators check the information and release process. Agree who will approve the result so the group leaves with a routine it can actually maintain.

Should we start with achievement spreadsheets?

Begin with made-up planning data. It teaches filtering, category definitions and reconciliation without exposing learner results. If the institution later wants a real-data pilot, its data owner should approve the scope and handling before that work begins.

Is on-site education training available?

TheColab delivers at Canterbury education workplaces and can shape a session around your staff's approved tasks. Public workshop days are useful for initial individual learning. A campus workshop can include the programme and information owners in the same review exercise.
