Education in Wellington

Porirua's Aotea College is a useful local reference for a coordinated AI response. The Ministry's report describes updated assessment expectations, authenticity statements and a staff handbook.3 These steps show why a workshop should involve the people who set the rules as well as the staff who prepare resources.

TheColab can teach at a Wellington region school, campus or training workplace, with remote sessions for geographically separated teams. We select exercises around the Copilot functions your accounts actually show. Microsoft documents differences in app integration, grounding and licences.6 Bring an approved course outline and invented administration records, with a course or policy owner available to review them.

Paid employees in education went from 24,877 in February 2020 to 26,163 in February 2025 (+5.2%).

Local context

  • Massey University's contact page places its Wellington campus in Mount Cook.2 The regional economic plan identifies education and workforce skills as growth enablers.1 A tertiary programme and a secondary department may use different planning material, so each team should define its learning outcomes and review duties before practising with Copilot.1,2

Where Copilot helps education teams

  • Prepare a Word activity draft

Reference an approved unit outline and a reading the provider permits you to use. Copilot supports document creation in the Microsoft application environment.6 Ask for a practice activity, a teacher guide and the assumptions behind the draft. The tutor checks subject accuracy and suitability before adapting it for the class. Preserve the original objectives so the review has a clear anchor.

    • Teacher or course tutor
    • Copilot in Word
  • Clarify a staff email request

Use Outlook with a fabricated exchange about room access or resource preparation. Microsoft's Copilot documentation includes correspondence assistance.6 Request a summary of the confirmed arrangements and questions still open. A programme coordinator reads the thread before drafting a reply, checks who owns each action and removes commitments that no staff member has approved.

    • Programme coordinator
    • Copilot in Outlook
  • Inspect an administrative workbook

In Excel, work with made-up resource categories and session counts. Ask Copilot for a grouped table and an explanation of how blank rows are treated. Spreadsheet support is a documented application feature.6 Verify its formula choices and reconcile the totals. The exercise can develop data-review habits without using identifiable attendance, achievement or learning-support records.

    • School or campus administrator
    • Copilot in Excel
  • Build a staff handbook lookup prototype

A maker can create a Copilot Studio agent from selected approved staff instructions. Studio provides knowledge-grounded agents and testing tools.7 Try questions about administrative processes and deliberately ask something the handbook does not cover. The agent should identify the reference or direct the user to its owner. Test access and source currency before staff use the prototype.

    • Education platform administrator
    • Copilot Studio

Review an activity before classroom use

  1. Identify the authorised reading, learning objective and educator who will review the draft.
  2. Generate a Word activity and ask for its assumptions and answer guidance.
  3. Try the activity with a colleague and check its explanations against the reading.
  4. Keep the revised resource with the provider's approved planning documents.

Education in Wellington: questions

Is a student account needed for staff training?

Use staff accounts with the features approved for the session. Confirm the account setup with your administrator and practise on public or fabricated material. Any later student access needs its own eligibility and policy check.

Can a Teams meeting be an exercise too?

An approved practice meeting about resource preparation can demonstrate summaries and actions. Copilot has documented meeting support.6 The chair should inspect the recap and distinguish a suggestion from a confirmed departmental decision.

What should a school leader contribute?

Explain the current allowed uses and name the people who review teaching, assessment and student-data tasks. The Aotea College report shows a staff group helping build consistent expectations.3 Your school should apply its own approved approach.

How do we keep a handbook agent current?

Assign someone to own its sources and review sample answers whenever a reference changes. Copilot Studio supports testing before publication.7 Include questions with missing evidence so the team can check how the agent handles uncertainty.
