Health in Nelson

Nelson Hospital's published service categories cover several areas of public care. Nelson Tasman Hospice describes specialist support in homes, hospitals and aged-care settings, while Manuka Street Hospital provides private surgery locally. This range gives administrators meaningful examples for service documentation, without assuming that any named provider has deployed Copilot.1,2,3

TheColab can bring a practical session to your Nelson team. Begin with a public guide and a made-up office workbook. Check the Microsoft 365 accounts used by participants: app functionality varies with access and subscription arrangements. Once the tools are confirmed, follow a fictional administrative issue from a draft explanation through review and a recorded follow-up.5

Paid employees in health went from 4,171 in February 2020 to 4,330 in February 2025 (+3.8%).

Local context

  • NRDA has reported local AI health research through its Sandbox showcase. The source establishes exploration, rather than routine clinical use. A sensible office pilot therefore starts with a bounded task and an owner who can check the original administrative material.44

Where Copilot helps health teams

  • Improve a public guide in Word

Open an approved non-clinical service guide and ask Copilot in Word to organise it around the questions a new administrator asks. Inspect whether the draft preserves the source's contact route and service boundaries. Microsoft documents Copilot app support; the training adds a review checklist that makes unsupported instructions visible before anyone circulates the rewritten guide.5

    • Health service administrator
    • Copilot in Word
  • Check fictional office demand in Excel

Prepare invented rows for enquiry type, handling state and office destination. Ask Copilot for help grouping the workbook and explaining a formula. The workbook owner should verify totals and inspect how missing states were handled. Keep the exercise about administrative demand, with no inference about a person's clinical priority or eligibility based on a generated chart.5

    • Administration manager
    • Copilot in Excel
  • Review a service-planning recap

Use a fictional Teams discussion about updating an induction guide. Ask for actions and unresolved questions, then compare them with the permitted meeting transcript. Teams recap is governed by meeting settings and available content. Draft a follow-up in Outlook only after attendees confirm who owns each change; an AI action list should not create commitments that were never agreed.5,6

    • Workforce or quality coordinator
    • Copilot in Teams and Outlook
  • Prototype a staff guidance agent

In Copilot Studio, configure a small set of public or approved administrative documents as knowledge. Test where staff find an induction form and how they escalate a general office question. Check the agent's source references and boundaries. Microsoft documents these knowledge-source options, but live patient-system access is outside this prototype and needs a separate organisational assessment.7

    • Health IT administrator
    • Copilot Studio

Practise updating an induction guide

  1. Choose an approved guide and invent a change request about an office process.
  2. Draft the revised passage and check it against the guide's service boundary.
  3. Record a fictional planning discussion and verify the proposed actions.
  4. Ask the designated owner to approve the text and publication location.

Health in Nelson: questions

Which materials suit a first health-office session?

A public service description, an approved induction guide and an invented workbook offer useful starting points. They let the office practise source checking without needing case files. Bring the process owner so participants can resolve ambiguous instructions while they learn.

Does a Microsoft account authorise use of health records?

The selected tool still needs an organisational privacy assessment. The health information code covers collection, use, storage and disclosure of identifiable health information.8 Ask your privacy and IT leads to review the proposed workflow before real records become part of it.

Can the recap include a sensitive clinical meeting?

Use a fictional administrative meeting in this workshop. Copilot's Teams behaviour depends on settings and meeting information.6 Your organisation should assess any sensitive meeting separately, including who may access the source transcript and the resulting document.

How should we judge a Studio prototype?

Test whether it finds the right approved source, stays within that source and refers unclear questions to staff. Studio supports configured knowledge for agents.7 Keep a record of failures and do not publish the prototype until its owner has accepted the results.
