Farming and horticulture in Wellington

A rural office needs more than a convincing answer: it needs the correct workbook, the current instruction and someone who will sign off the result. TheColab comes to your team to practise those checks alongside prompting. We select exercises for administrators, owners and supervisors with different levels of Microsoft experience.

Local food-and-fibre research highlights digital-adoption barriers and business-planning needs.2,4 That supports a modest starting point: choose a familiar office task and improve its handover. Microsoft describes different Copilot capabilities by account and licence, so we check the available applications before setting the session's scope.6

Paid employees in farming and horticulture went from 3,355 in February 2020 to 3,158 in February 2025 (−5.9%).

Local context

  • Wellington's supplied 2025 Stats NZ regional aggregation reports 3,158 employees across agriculture, forestry and fishing, rather than growing alone.1 Greater Wellington's rural advisory work spans land management, freshwater and resilience.3 This makes clear responsibility and reliable source documents especially useful topics for farm-office training.1,3

Where Copilot helps farming and horticulture teams

  • Question a season workbook in Excel

Use Copilot in Excel on a practice table of crop receipts and dispatch entries. Ask for a formula explanation or a comparison by crop, then inspect the selected range and units. Microsoft's app guidance describes Excel analysis support.6 Keep estimated values out of blank cells until the records owner supplies evidence.

    • Rural accounts administrator
    • Copilot in Excel
  • Prepare a supplier response in Outlook

Give Outlook a narrow drafting task: list the information a supplier still needs and propose a reply for review. Check the original thread for attachments, changed instructions and unresolved terms. Copilot's inbox assistance depends on your account capabilities.6 The administrator should confirm quantities and collection arrangements before sending anything.

    • Farm supply administrator
    • Copilot in Outlook
  • Rewrite approved instructions in Word

Work from a current contractor sheet in Word and ask for separate task, location and escalation sections. Copilot supports document drafting and rewriting.6 Use a generic Masterton farm scenario, with the supervisor checking every operational statement. Save the reviewed document in the business's usual system rather than treating chat output as the master copy.

    • Farm operations supervisor
    • Copilot in Word
  • Capture the actions from a grower discussion

During an approved Teams meeting, ask Copilot to distinguish commitments from proposals and list actions needing an owner. Microsoft documents live meeting assistance and transcription conditions for later access.7 Resolve unclear responsibilities with the people present; do not let a recap silently convert a tentative discussion into an agreed instruction.

    • Grower relationship manager
    • Copilot in Teams
  • Test an internal procedure agent

Prototype a Copilot Studio agent against a small, approved SharePoint knowledge set. Studio's registered SharePoint sources follow user access permissions.8 Ask where to find the current packing form, then test what happens when a file is missing or inaccessible. Direct staff to the document owner when an answer cannot be supported.

    • Microsoft administrator and office lead
    • Copilot Studio and SharePoint

Review the office's packing instruction trail

  1. Locate the approved instruction document and remove superseded copies from the practice set.
  2. Check which staff accounts may open that document before starting the Copilot exercise.
  3. Draft a concise packing briefing in Word and compare it with the source line by line.
  4. Have the operations lead approve the document and record the review in the usual register.

Farming and horticulture in Wellington: questions

Does a rural team need new licences?

First inspect what your work accounts already provide. Copilot access differs across applications and subscriptions.6 Choose the training exercises from the capabilities available to the people attending.

Can this work with a messy spreadsheet?

Use the session to identify headers, mixed units and unclear entries before requesting analysis. Keep an untouched copy so the office can distinguish corrections from generated suggestions.

Should the agent include every farm file?

Begin with a limited reference set whose owners and access rights are known. Broader search is useful only when obsolete material and private folders have been addressed.

Will you travel to our rural workplace?

On-site delivery is available across the Wellington region. We plan around your team's devices and suitable practice material; staff can also join public workshop days for a general introduction.
