Tourism and hospitality in Tasman

Tasman's accommodation and food-services division had 1,944 employees in the verified February 2025 aggregate. That industry measure does not capture every business serving visitors.1 Training begins with the records your own operation uses, rather than a broad tourism estimate.

TheColab comes to operators across Tasman for hands-on sessions. Invite a reservations lead or hospitality supervisor alongside the office administrator. Pick an enquiry, a briefing or an authorised export that they already understand, and agree who can approve the result during the exercise.

Paid employees in tourism and hospitality went from 2,632 in February 2020 to 2,383 in February 2025 (−9.5%).

Local context

  • Māpua Ferry connects cyclists and foot passengers with Rabbit Island and Māpua Wharf. Guest directions can cross several operators, which makes checking the current source a useful training habit.22
  • NRDA's 2024/25 report records AI training for food and beverage businesses across Nelson Tasman. This is regional learning activity, with no evidence that a named wharf restaurant attended.33

Where Copilot helps tourism and hospitality teams

  • Draft a reply to a changed booking

Outlook assistance offers a place to prepare correspondence.5 In a generic Motueka accommodation exercise, draft a response using the approved booking conditions and the guest's cleared request. Ask for unanswered points separately. Reservations staff verify availability and any charge before accepting the wording or sending a promise.

    • Reservations coordinator
    • Copilot in Outlook guest drafts
  • Make a service briefing from approved notes

Use Word support to draft the shift briefing.5 Work with a reviewed function sheet and list service changes, room setup and the person to contact. Have the supervisor check every guest-facing detail. Keep the current kitchen or activity safety instruction available alongside the handout for direct reference.

    • Hospitality duty manager
    • Copilot in Word briefings
  • Explain an occupancy export

Excel Copilot supports table questions and charts.6 Practise analysing a cleared accommodation export by room category, keeping cancellations separate from occupied nights. Ask which entries lack a status. The accounts lead reconciles the totals with the booking system before the manager interprets a demand pattern or plans staffing.

    • Accommodation accounts administrator
    • Copilot in Excel reporting
  • Retrieve operations-meeting actions

Teams summaries can help revisit a management discussion.8 Ask for confirmed actions from a permitted service-planning call, with open issues in a different list. The duty manager checks who accepted each action. If staff need a later meeting recap, prepare the required transcript and its authorised access in advance.

    • Visitor operations manager
    • Copilot in Teams action review
  • Create a staff information finder

A Studio agent can draw answers from selected knowledge.7 Prototype an internal guide to the approved guest-information library. Test a question about an uncertain transfer or an exceptional refund. Require a source link and a staff contact. Leave booking changes and public safety advice outside its pilot actions.

    • Business technology coordinator
    • Copilot Studio staff knowledge

Check an enquiry through to reply

  1. Remove unnecessary guest details from a practice enquiry.
  2. Select the current booking policy and visitor information approved by the operator.
  3. Draft a reply with unknown availability left explicit.
  4. Ask reservations staff to verify the conditions and approve the final message.

Tourism and hospitality in Tasman: questions

Can a restaurant use examples without bookings data?

Choose a reviewed function brief or supplier enquiry. A supervisor can practise making a staff notice, checking it and returning edits. That exercise can be useful before anyone proposes access to guest records or a reservations system.

Will Copilot answer our visitors directly?

The initial exercises produce drafts for staff review. If you later consider a public assistant, define its permitted information and escalation route first. Test incomplete or outdated sources before it can publish an answer to a guest.

What setup do operations meetings need?

Check organisational settings and attendee access before the practice call. Microsoft requires a transcript for questions about a meeting after it ends.8 Agree who can use and retain that transcript within your own business process.

How can seasonal staff use the work later?

Keep the approved prompt with a sample input, a checked result and the supervisor's review notes. Put it where the next shift can find it. Teach the review route during induction before asking new staff to draft guest messages.
