Farming and horticulture in Tasman

Tasman's agriculture, forestry and fishing division had 4,920 employees in the checked February 2025 aggregate. That wider category includes more than growers, so we do not present it as an orchard workforce count.1

TheColab comes to your Tasman workplace for practical Microsoft 365 training. Start with a routine office task and the people who know its records. We agree which files can be used, check the available Copilot features and work through review before sharing.

Paid employees in farming and horticulture went from 4,932 in February 2020 to 4,920 in February 2025 (−0.2%).

Local context

  • Golden Bay Fruit's Motueka operation links labelled bins with cool storage, grading and packing. Those handoffs give a useful local basis for practising traceable summaries. The company is context for the exercise, not a claimed training client.22
  • HortNZ reported grower damage from the June and July 2025 Nelson-Tasman floods. A checked recovery update is therefore a relevant alternative to a harvest example when your team chooses its task.33

Where Copilot helps farming and horticulture teams

  • Explore a packout workbook

Copilot in Excel can surface patterns in a table.6 For a generic Motueka orchard office, practise grouping an authorised export by variety and pick date. Ask for missing fields before asking for a chart. Reconcile the totals with the original export and keep rejected rows visible to the reviewer.

    • Orchard operations administrator
    • Copilot in Excel
  • Prepare a grower reply

Use Outlook assistance for a draft response to a collection enquiry.5 Supply the agreed collection note and ask it to separate confirmed arrangements from unanswered questions. Your grower-services lead checks the destination and date. A polite email must not silently turn a proposed pickup into a commitment.

    • Grower liaison officer
    • Copilot in Outlook
  • Build an induction handout

Word drafting support gives a starting point for an orchard-office handout.5 Refer to the current approved procedure and request headings for arrival, reporting and escalation. Have the supervisor compare each instruction with the source. Use the draft to support a conversation with workers, with practical demonstrations led by the crew manager.

    • Seasonal workforce coordinator
    • Copilot in Word
  • Recover actions from a planning meeting

Teams Copilot can summarise discussion and suggest actions.8 Practise with a permitted harvest-planning meeting, then confirm owners and unresolved matters. For questions after the meeting, the transcript must be available. Do not treat a suggestion captured in discussion as an instruction that the farm manager has approved.

    • Farm business manager
    • Copilot in Teams
  • Find the approved office procedure

A Copilot Studio agent can draw on chosen knowledge sources.7 Prototype an internal finder for bin-record corrections or supplier onboarding. Ask it to point to the controlling file and the responsible contact. Test a question with no answer in the library, and require escalation before widening access.

    • Copilot Studio knowledge agent

Practise a harvest reporting handoff

  1. Select a cleared packout export and preserve its original version.
  2. Ask Excel for a variety summary with a separate list of incomplete records.
  3. Compare the chart with the source rows and record any correction.
  4. Draft a grower update from the checked result and obtain the manager's release approval.

Farming and horticulture in Tasman: questions

Can we work with our existing harvest sheets?

Yes, once you authorise a suitable copy. Bring field definitions as well as the workbook. The practical task is to explain its structure, detect gaps and check the output, rather than assume every export is analysis-ready.

Will every attendee see the same Copilot tools?

Account access differs between Copilot experiences.5 Confirm the tools available to your pilot users before the session so that a shared exercise does not depend on a feature someone cannot open.

Can a small farm start with office work only?

A supplier email and a reviewed procedure make a sensible first session. Invite the person who sends the message and the person who checks it. Expand the pilot when both can explain the review steps.

What should we keep after the training?

Retain a checked prompt, its permitted inputs and a named reviewer for the chosen task. Add an example that failed. That record helps the next seasonal administrator understand where the workflow needs human judgement.
