Farming and horticulture in Southland
A rural office can have the same decision scattered across an email thread, a workbook and a meeting note. Our training starts by choosing which record is authoritative. Participants practise making a draft from that record, then check what Copilot inferred or missed. The final message still belongs to the person responsible for the work.
Southland has practical data settings for these exercises. The Southern Dairy Hub runs local farm-system research, and Southern Forests lists mapping and drone services from a business with a Gore office. Those examples establish the regional context; they are not claims that either organisation uses Copilot.2,3
Paid employees in farming and horticulture went from 8,315 in February 2020 to 7,783 in February 2025 (−6.4%).

Local context
- Environment Southland provides farm plan guidance and an example plan. Public material can anchor a Word exercise without exposing an actual property's information.11
- The Chamber advertises AI literacy learning in Invercargill. This is evidence of regional business interest, with no farm participation rate stated.44

Where Copilot helps farming and horticulture teams
Question an Excel purchases table
Prepare a synthetic farm purchases workbook with separate columns for product, quantity, unit and supplier. Practise asking Copilot in Excel for a grouping or formula, then inspect its inputs. Check whether a blank row or mixed unit changes the answer. Retain the source table so the bookkeeper can reproduce the result during review.5

- Copilot in Excel
Draft a supplier clarification in Outlook
Use a mock correspondence thread about a changed delivery. Ask Outlook's Copilot assistance to draft questions about the unresolved item and the proposed receiving arrangement. Compare the draft with the last confirmed message. Delete assumptions about stock, price or delivery commitments before the responsible manager sends the reply.5
- Rural purchasing coordinator
- Copilot in Outlook
Prepare an adviser briefing in Word
From an approved plan extract, create a draft briefing with headings for available evidence and questions for the adviser. Keep exact property obligations tied to the original document. A generic forestry office could practise this with a planting brief and an access note. Word provides the editing surface for the reviewed document.1,5
- Farm or forestry administrator
- Copilot in Word
Check a coordination meeting recap
In an appropriately configured Teams meeting, practise reviewing a Copilot recap of a fictional office planning discussion. Verify each person's assigned action and separate suggestions from decisions. If a recording or transcript is unavailable, use approved written notes for a different exercise. Confirm meeting settings before teaching this workflow to the wider crew.5
- Rural operations lead
- Copilot in Teams
Prototype an internal document agent
Use Copilot Studio to test a small agent over cleared office procedures. A suitable first question is where the supplier receipt form lives. Include an unanswered query so the group can inspect the fallback. Keep the prototype confined to document lookup until the owner has reviewed access, source accuracy and publishing arrangements.6
- Microsoft 365 administrator
- Copilot Studio knowledge agent
Review a rural purchasing draft
- Choose the approved supplier thread and receiving record.
- Ask Copilot to identify unresolved delivery questions.
- Check the draft against the workbook and latest confirmed email.
- Have the purchasing owner approve the outgoing message.

Farming and horticulture in Southland: questions
Is this suitable for a rural office team?
Choose the staff who handle business files and supplier communication. We build the practice around their office tasks and bring field specialists into the review where needed.
Can we start without connecting farm systems?
Begin with a cleared document set and a fictional Excel table. An internal Studio prototype can be restricted to selected knowledge while you assess it.6
What should our IT contact check first?
Confirm accounts, app availability and access to the training folder. Match the course exercises to the Copilot functions that participants can actually open.5
How do you reach rural Southland teams?
We deliver on site at an agreed office or local meeting room. Bring the administrator and a task owner so the group can review its drafts together.
