Module 1: Welcome and getting set up
Sign in and check privacy controls
Allow 5 minutes. Make an account check before you enter work information.
Start with the work account
- Open Copilot for work.
- Sign in with your Microsoft Entra work or school account.
- Check that the selected account is the one your employer approved.
- Look for the green shield next to New Chat. It indicates enterprise data protection.
- Read your team's rules before you paste or attach a file.
If you cannot confirm the account or protection, stop at the invented examples and ask IT. Older work URLs may redirect to the new Copilot address.
Set the right controls
With enterprise data protection, work prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models. You do not need to find a consumer training switch to gain this protection. Work interactions can be logged and retained for audit. "Not used for training" does not mean "not stored".
For separate personal practice, check Settings for training controls and read the current personal Copilot privacy guidance. Controls vary by app version and account. The guidance covers personalisation and other privacy choices. It does not give one training-toggle path for every account. If you cannot find the control, check Microsoft's current help. Personal privacy choices do not turn a personal account into your employer's approved work service.
Ask your administrator to review Allow web search in Copilot. Web search can send generated search terms to Bing, which has separate handling rules. If your work task does not need the public web, agree whether that setting should be off for your group. Do not change organisation-wide controls yourself.
Warning: Protection settings do not give you permission to use every piece of data. Keep passwords, access tokens and sensitive personal records out of these exercises.
Try it: 2 minutes
Use this checklist. If you lack access, fill it in as questions for IT.
- Correct work account selected.
- Enterprise protection confirmed.
- Team data rule found, or requested.
- Web-search policy understood, or raised with IT.
Done when: you can explain why the account matters before the prompt.
