Manufacturing in Taranaki

Consider a generic engineering supplier in New Plymouth preparing a bid and an internal capacity review. Its staff need a workbook summary, a capability draft and a reliable record of the bid meeting. Training can join those tasks through Excel, Word and Teams while keeping commercial decisions with the supplier.

TheColab comes to Taranaki sites for hands-on learning with approved examples. We establish which Microsoft apps and Copilot capabilities your staff can use, then work through a complete office task. Access differs across licences and organisational settings; training should reflect your actual Microsoft environment.4

Paid employees in manufacturing went from 8,773 in February 2020 to 8,587 in February 2025 (−2.1%).

Local context

  • The Taranaki Alliance coordinates regional industrial capability for larger work and new markets. That makes checked bid content useful for engineering firms considering wider supply chains.3
  • Food processing also provides a local setting: Whareroa's dairy products and ANZCO Waitara's prepared beef lines involve different product records. Training examples can reflect that variety using synthetic data.1,2

Where Copilot helps manufacturing teams

  • Review production exceptions in Excel

Ask Copilot in Excel to explore a sample downtime workbook by product and shift. Explain the column definitions and request a chart alongside the rows that need investigation. A planner checks the aggregation, confirms that blank entries are visible and adds operational context. Treat the output as a meeting aid rather than evidence that a machine or operator caused a problem.4

    • Production planner
    • Copilot in Excel
  • Prepare a customer response in Word

Use an approved specification excerpt and factual product notes to draft a response structure in Word. Ask for a section covering unanswered requirements and a section listing information the quality team must verify. Keep any assurance of compliance out of the draft unless its evidence has been supplied and checked. The account owner reviews the completed response against the issued specification.4

    • Technical sales coordinator
    • Copilot in Word
  • Turn a bid meeting into assigned questions

Use Teams Copilot in an enabled mock meeting to capture discussion about production capacity, procurement and subcontractor responsibilities. Ask for proposed actions and unresolved questions separately. Check the transcript and ask participants to confirm their commitments. The bid lead approves the final list so a tentative suggestion does not become an accidental promise to a prospective customer.6

    • Engineering bid lead
    • Copilot in Teams
  • Clarify a supplier email chain

In Outlook, summarise a permitted thread about a changed delivery or component specification. Request the latest stated position, earlier conflicting messages and a draft clarification reply. Staff inspect the original attachments and verify whether the supplier actually confirmed the proposed arrangement. This exercise teaches the difference between summarising correspondence and making a purchasing decision on the manufacturer's behalf.4

    • Procurement administrator
    • Copilot in Outlook
  • Pilot a procedure-locating agent

An administrator can explore Copilot Studio with a small approved document collection. Design the agent to point staff to the current procedure and request human help when the question lacks a product or process. Test obsolete documents and conflicting names before sharing it. Keep the pilot separate from machinery control and product release, with a document owner responsible for its sources.5

    • Systems and document-control lead
    • Copilot Studio agents

Build a checked factory-office review pack

  1. Choose a synthetic workbook and approved capability notes with a specific question for the planning meeting.
  2. Review the workbook in Excel and use Word to organise the evidence and open questions.
  3. Discuss the draft in a mock Teams meeting, then confirm the proposed owners and next actions.
  4. Prepare supplier clarifications in Outlook and let the responsible commercial or quality lead approve them.

Manufacturing in Taranaki: questions

Can different departments attend together?

Yes. Give planning, quality and procurement staff separate responsibilities within a shared fictional job. Each person can check an output they understand, and the group can see how a workbook observation becomes a document or supplier question.

Is Copilot Chat access enough for these exercises?

Microsoft distinguishes its Copilot experiences and their app and work-data access. Confirm the enabled capabilities before selecting the workbook, meeting and document tasks. We can adjust the exercise when a participant lacks a particular feature.4

Should the agent answer production safety questions?

Start by directing staff to an approved source and a responsible person. Studio lets you design agents, but your business must test how they respond to missing or conflicting information. Do not give the pilot control over production decisions.5

Can we practise with local industry material?

Public Alliance information supports a capability discussion, and the published plant descriptions supply recognisable product categories. These are context sources for exercises; they provide no evidence of a training relationship or AI use at those plants.1,2,3
